Imagine finding out that your digital camera memory card has nothing on it! That would be the memory card that once contained photos of your helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon, a boat trip, a visit to the Skywalk and a whole bunch of other photos from Las Vegas! There aren’t enough expletives available to describe that feeling, especially as there was no obvious reason as to why the card appeared to be wiped.

Fortunately some of the photos had already made their way to Flickr, but the rest appeared to be lost forever. That was until Jude remembered an article in the recent sunday papers about software you can download to rescue deleted photos from your memory cards. A quick search and eImage Recovery from Octanesoft was soon recovering photos showing various shots of the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.

There’s a demo version (which is only useful to see if it actually works with your card) but to save recovered images you do need to purchase the full product – but at £14 it’s a serious bargain! The only disappointment was that it didn’t recover the .mov file of the Bellagio fountains (which had to go on the camera, because the camcorder battery we had decided to be flat at the crucial moment). However, given we’d recovered 200 odd photos which seemingly had been lost it wasn’t “too bad” a loss.

Interestingly the software managed to locate even older photos – so it just goes to show that you do leave a digital fingerprint whenever you use memory cards, even if you think you’ve wiped them (or they mysteriously delete the photos themselves!).
