Big Daddy Needles Giant Haystacks
Leave the first response March 2, 2006 / Posted in Web StuffFor you young people out there Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks were two wrestlers – not WWE wrestling but the type where overweight guys in leotards ran into each other and shouted “easy! easy!” a few times. Rumours are that it was fixed, but it kept kids amused for many an hour on a saturday afternoon.
Big Daddy however in Google terms refers to some strange goings on at some datacenters. Already some siteowners are worried (Webmasterworld) and I have to say it’s not looking good – now here’s the connection to the title – in fact finding pages that are in the current Google index in the Big Daddy data centers is like finding a needle in a giant haystack!
What does it all mean? Who knows?! I’ve read a few things on Matt Cutts’ blog, looked at Webmasterworld and if these Big Daddy DCs come into play then our poor duck is about to get the website equivalent of bird flu – at least in Google SEO terms. It shouldn’t be terminal, but it won’t be pretty for a time and wings and prayers might be the order of the day! Frustratingly there doesn’t seem to be any obvious reason for the changes or potential damage either – it’s just one of those Google things.
Looking at the results though there’s not a lot to suggest that the results are “right” and users may not be too impressed with things. But this is all speculation and regardless of what happens with Big Daddy there’s not a lot we can do to change things – at least not until the system is in place. The order of the day is to keep updating, doing new content and provide a service, however it doesn’t stop the concern.
