Learning to Spin Plates
Leave the first response April 28, 2005 / Posted in UncategorizedBeing a siteowner is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman, you put something up and hope it’s enjoyed for a long time by lots of people…. no, that’s the wrong analogy… start again!
Being a siteowner is bit like spinning plates (ok it’s not as risque as the above, but hey!). You spend time getting one plate spinning, only to have to run to the next to get that going, then it’s back to the first, and so and so forth with numerous plates. The plates represent a wide range of issues and problems. Users, site development, product feeds, individual websites, stats, admin, new programs, old programs, updating content, removing content, SEO and probably a bundle more.
Keeping users happy is a basic necessity of running a site. An important thing to learn is that no matter how hard you try you’re just not to going to be able to please everyone. Even after you’ve tried to address the main or common issues there’s always going to be someone who just doesn’t like your site.
That’s fine, but it was slightly perplexing this week to read a negative comment about Loquax that said “I don’t like the way it’s run”. Weird!! So, what’s the lesson here… well, spend time keeping the majority of users happy and that plate will spin nicely… and don’t worry about individual opinions as sometimes they’re just wrong!
