In an attempt to get more organised this year, and in part because the new blog design has a feed, I’ve started uploading more photos onto my Flickr account. Usually my photos sit on memory cards or on the computer, often until such a time I remember to store them properly and on occasion make some proper prints.

Anyway, by adding them to Flickr the photos can be tagged and then streamed to various relevant blogs – so at least the pictures have a potential audience!

And then I discovered you can actually blog direct from Flickr.

Now, for some of you reading this, it may not be that a great revelation, but I’m slow to catch on and it’s a feature I’d not seen before. Simply by having a Flickr account you can use any public use photo and include it in your blog for illustration purposes.

Remember a picture paints a thousand words… and these pictures are free to use!

For example you may be considering developing a holiday site and are stuck for images for a hotel, beach or tourist attraction. Have a look on Flickr and you may well find something to use…. even better if it’s your own photo!

Flickr allows you to add as many sites as you like to your account, so it’s ideal if you have multiple blogs. Publishing is also easy as they offer 5 preset formats for including the photo and content direct from Flickr to your blog. You can change the css and html to your own taste if required (very useful as only the 500px option is actually any good).

Another advantage of photo content, especially your own, is that it can give you a starting point for writing your blog. For example instead of adding a few lines saying “there’s special offers on holidays to Las Vegas” you could include a relevant photo and elaborate with your own experiences of the area… thereby offering your user some truly unique content.
