I agree with Paul. However to be perfectly honest we need to be sure that we're getting value out of spending ÂŁ25k on an incentive - which is why we have a number of categories that mean any affiliate has a chance of winning - obviously not every category, but at least one of them.

Top two earners, best new affiliate, biggest increase on the same period last year, best improved (for those that earned less than ÂŁ1k in the three months prior to the comp dates), and then a prize draw - one entry for every 5 sales.

We feel this gives a fair balance for all types of affiliate, whilst ensuring we get good value from our investment in the affiliate area.

Hi Jason

Good post - I think you've raised a great point here in the way that the competitions are structured. I thought i'd take a moment out to respond to an interesting comment you made regrding the IWOOT competition:

"It’s not about the sales, although it would be interesting to know whether this does sway the judging"

We've ran the new Silverstone competition in the same we we ran the Whistler competition over the Christmas period and I intend to judge it in the same way.

The judges of the Whistler competition consisted of our DM people (the guys that put the catalogue together) and our creative team (the branding people). The online marketing team briefed the judges on each entrant to the competition only in terms of what our affiliates had told us they had done to promote IWOOT over Xmas and and practical elements we had noted ourselves.

None of the people who determind the IWOOT competition winners had access to individual affiliate stats, and this I hope makes it a fair competition.

There was no way in the world myself, Julian or Rich could have judged it as we'd have obviously known who generated the most revenues, and as you rightly pointed out, subconciously this may well have swayed the position.

I mention this only because the format of the IWOOT competitions is designed to, and I hope does give all affiliates old or new the chance to win, if we were to give the positions to the top revenue generating people I could predict the winners month after month after month.

My philosophy is largely that if an affiliate is making the effort to promote our brand, thats all we can ask of them and they fully deserve to be recognised and rewarded for that.

We do of course work closely with our top performers and reward them in ways that arn't as publicised as the competitions we've started to do.

I worked extremely hard on our competition format last September and honetly, I can't think of a more level way then what we're currently doing to position our competitions - ideas are always welcome of course!

An extremely thought provoking article Jason - Good Job!

Cheers

Well they all leave me cold - do I really want to go to Barbados with a bunch of 30 year old lads - who appear to act erm... laddish, from all accounts - actually No!
and as for racing it irritates the heck out of me - all that revving of engines and bone jarring noise - no thanks

there are some lady affiliates, who appreciate the finer things in life ;)

They are what they are, interesting was to get some face time you might not otherwise get by just offering boring old commission. I think the format of the Sunshine ones is great and gives everyone a chance to win, and so far it’s not been your same old faces winning, and to be far the reason same old faces are winning is they are working the programs and generally managed to reach a few of the different options for winning and not just one.

However these are what they are, you either take part or you don’t. It’s like the A4U Awards nice if you win but you’re not working to win an award because if you are then you seriously need to think about why you’re doing this. I win a prize every year from Affiliate Marketing a holiday (or 4) from my hard work, having a home to live in a car to drive and can get my kids what the need (note need not “want”, I am not that well off LOL) however it’s easy to get distracted by prizes and don’t get me wrong I be delighted to win any but really it should be a by product of doing what your doing but if you do just happen to launch a holiday site off the back of a “mission” is that not a win for everyone even if you don’t win a prize ;)
