All Togged Up In A Tuxedo For Nowt….
8 Comments June 5, 2009 / Posted in AwardsAfter a couple of days of hangover, sleep deprivation and pigman bird flu I’ve finally emerged to blog about the A4UAwards. I’ve shredded the acceptance speech and moved my ceramic fat duck from B&Q back to the vacant space on the mantelpiece as unsurprisingly the best blog went to Kirsty over at Affiliate Stuff. A well done to Lee too for his highly commended.
So there was I all togged up in a tuxedo for nowt…
Nowt but a good time that is (nice things being said on OLD = plan to win Blog Award for 2010).
Firstly a big thanks to the three time award winning agency Existem AM for inviting myself and Jude to their table. You guys are really deserving of the accolades you get and it was also great to see Hannah honoured as best affiliate manager. Very well deserved.
It might have been the copious amounts of red wine I’d drank and slight delirium brought on by Lemsip, but I thought all the awards seem to go to those that deserved them. I was especially pleased to see DGM amongst the highly commended although everyone has a battle on their hands to topple Affiliate Window as the top network.
The vertical awards, at least in my opinion, need a slight tweak – just to encourage more involvement from the affiliate side of things. I’d like to see merchants and networks putting forward affiliates next year for the shortlists as in one case there was just one entry (so well done Bingo Hideout for making the effort).
Whilst these awards most certainly, and quite rightly, celebrate the whole industry it would be great to see more affiliates on those shortlists and being recognised.
The comedian Jason Manford was entertaining, Johnny Vegas on keyboard looked a bit bored though but it was cool that Alan “The Voice of the Balls” did the voice overs for the awards.
Personally I’d have happily sacrificed “the balls” for a bit more veg and a spot of gravy at dinner. Perhaps duck, spuds and broccoli is a big favourite in Bristol, but the plate was screaming out for carrots and to be drowned in something wet.
All in all it was an enjoyable evening and it was great to catch up with some of the real “old school” people like Malcolm, Tyson and James Cooper (he’s on telly you know – 1pm Channel 5, not that he mentioned it) as well as the usual suspects who make being in the industry a lot of fun.
Nice one as ever to Matt and his Existem team for a great event and a very big well done to all winners, highly commended and nominees (not even a bloomin’ graphic to add to the site… sob).

You looked stunning my lovely! If Jude wasn’t with you there’s no telling what could of happened
eh now, now! ;o)
He might believe me now when I say he scrubs up well in a tux!
I know I’m a catch
)
But the way I was feeling towards the end of the night I’d have been lucky to have even raised a smile!
Wasn’t for nothing mate – you got to enjoy some scintillating company – and me and Jase were there too! Huge thanks to Existem AM for sorting us out with tickets and looking after us so well – and fully deserving of your awards. Ditto Kirsty – mucho deserved, and will be hard to beat next year!
At least you had three items on your plate – I refused broccoli thinking more veg was coming, so just ended up with a bit of duck and potatoes on my plate lol – Loved Johnny Vegas on keyboards, though my pic didn’t come out too well.
Had a clear head the next day – £4.80 for a small bottle of beer or £10 for a glass of wine helped no end with that!
well you got my vote anyways!! And you were 3rd anyways by all accounts!!
Hey Jason, Glad you enjoyed the evening!
Good points made, you were very close the top two btw! And if you’ve not already had an email from Claire we have some rather nifty badges you can display on your blog if you so desire.
We really wanted to include more affiliate categories this year, which on the whole attracted a very good number of entries except the obvious one! (where was yours?)
I’m sure we’ll tweak again for 2010
As for Drinks John it is Park Lane! – my G&T was a hefty £12!
It was a fantastic night, and I agree that it was very encouraging to see DGM get highly commended.
As for the Tux for nowt… you should have headed over to the met bar and mingled with the famous. I would have been more than happy to have posed with you for a photo as I did with a few otheres: http://www.twitpic.com/6w9mr
@Matt “where was yours?” – we entered the previous year and tbh it never crossed my mind to enter again with the same thing (albeit we have jazzed up the trackpots now). I guess my feeling was “what had we done good 2008/09″ – and deep down I didn’t think we’d done anything good enough to go forward. Wish we had now mind as highly commended was a shoe in LOL! Fair play to the winners though – they do have some nice features.
A tweak for 2010 would be cool… the affiliate community gets to pick the best in networks, agencies etc… turn it on it’s head and get the merchants, networks to celebrate the people who do the affy stuff for them?
@Frostie – cool pic! Unfortunately Princess Anne didn’t stop for a photo with me and Jude as we arrived at the hotel
