From UBD Moneymaker To UBD Cool – Changing Themes at OLD

Whilst looking for a theme for a new site idea I spotted that Unique Blog Designs have launched a brand new theme – Cool Theme. It looked ideal and I liked the look so much that I decided to switch One Little Duck over from UBD’s free Moneymaker theme – and here it is!

On the plus side I like the fact the green has now gone and the site has a more stylish look. It also integrates the trendy new Twitter plus a plugin for Flickr photos (at the bottom of the page). This now means I’ll have to keep twittering and also get round to uploading a load more photos to my Flickr account.

The down side (which in itself is a plus side) is that the theme does need a bit of tarting up! First off the 900px picture of a tree on a hill will need to replaced with something duck like (time to look through those photos) and I may look at changing the grey tabs and tables on the right at some point.

I’d have liked UBD to include the Feedburner options that they had in Moneymaker, mainly because they’d tarted it up nicely and it looked better than the rather bland email/rss box currently on the right. Top commentators and recent comments are also missing, and for some reason I can’t get recent comments functioning. Hopefully these are things that can be fixed, but being lazy I’d love to have seen them in place from the start.

I’m not sure whether I’ll reintroduce the tag cloud in this version of OLD, but it’s notable that Cool Theme doesn’t show tags in the posts. I’ve never really been that bothered with tags in all my blogs so am wondering whether they’re of any use? Does anyone know whether they’re that important?

All in all I’m so far really pleased with the change from Moneymaker to Cool Theme. Unique Blog Designs offer a multi-use licence for Cool Theme for just $77 and if you’re able to do a bit of your own coding and tarting up then it’s a superb basis for a good looking premium style blog without paying premium prices.

Cool Theme Verdict – cool, naturally!

Something else for your todo list, there’s huge gaps at the top when viewing in IE7, but looks fine in firefox.

sorted that out.. some other niggles comparing IE to FF but hopefully nothing as serious as the spacing issue

We have the same WP Theme
I too cannot get recent comments to work.
I have no title and my rss feed is a mess.
So I must compliment you on how much better than mine yours site is.
    Expecting rapid learning curve soon.

    Hi Jane

I still can’t get recent comments to work – I’ll have a look at the coding a bit more today I think and see if I can get them working.

Checked your blog and it looks fine to me – so far – but any problem drop me an email and I’ll see if it’s something I’ve encountered with the theme.

Hey…great post. I’m just in the process of switching to this theme and trying to find out more about it. Do you know if there’s info anywhere on how to change the heading, the colors, recent comments etc?

    Thanks a lot!

Hi there, cool theme, I’m still considering to buy this theme. Is it easy-customizable?
