The Sun Isn’t Shining In Affiliate Marketing!
Things happen in affiliate marketing that you have to accept. For example The Sun have decided to change their bingo platform from Tombola over to a bespoke offering from Jackpotjoy. The site is due to launch next week. Because of this change, the affiliate program was terminated at the start of August - and compensation offered to affiliates who were on revshare deals.
That, whilst a bit of a pain, is acceptable (well to a point) provided things get up and running when the new site is in place.
However, this is AM - and affiliates are an afterthought!
This weekend Sun Bingo players (and remember that these will include the ones affiliates have referred to the old site and were once earning revshare on) were emailed to “pre-register” to play at the new site in exchange for the chance to win prizes in a £100,000 giveaway.
So affiliates who have lost out on earnings for players to “Old” Sun Bingo will now potentially also lose on those players if they decide to pre-register on “New” Sun Bingo! You can also bet your bottom dollar that the affiliate program will not launch on day one (or indeed be available to send players for this pre-registration). Go on My Sun prove me wrong!
I’m pretty disappointed by this and would have hoped that somewhere in the marketing launch mix the affiliates would have had an opportunity to get promoting the new site as soon as possible! This allows us to update established content and pick up promotions after the program’s closure.
The bingo affiliate world is now a reflection of the weather here in Swansea - The Sun definitely isn’t shining!

It’s not ideal, but I think The Sun Bingo is currently where Gala were about 2 years ago when it comes to dealing with affiliates. Let’s not forget that affiliates were an afterthought for The Sun to start with, their programme is only about 8 months old I think. Hopefully now that they have Jackpot Joy on board, their affiliate offering will be a lifetime revshare finally.

The Sun is scum!
Personal feelings of this brand aside… Totally agree that from a business and affiliate marketing perspective, this is low, and I would imagine deal quite a blow for those involved, especially as you say, in terms of rev share. I think instances like this, the revshare should become datashare, and you be given details of those visitors your have referred. This would then give you the chance to jump on the same bandwagon and tell your Sun Subscribers about an alternative. Just a thought….
So what are your plans for the future? You going to drop them following the way they have treated you?
