Evans Above! How To Baffle Your Affiliates!

A few weeks back Evans, the ladies high street fashion retailer, launched on Tradedoubler. We applied, despite already registered via Affiliate Window, as just in case they decide, like Burtons, to leave Awin and set up solely on TD. Unfortunately our application was “denied”. As usual there was no explanation or reason - which was baffling as they’d been no issue before with Awin.

Despite a couple of emails to TD, nothing changed and so another application went in under a different TD account (where you list other sites). This account is almost identical to the main account we use - with the main site being Loquax. Guess what! Yes this account was accepted. Let flocks of angels materialise and dance around your feet.

So if account #2 was ok, why not #1? TD were emailed - asking if it’d be ok to accept account #1 as that’s the one we use all the time. Oh dear - bad move. Now accounts #1 and #2 have been denied! The good news is that there’s an explanation… and here it is “Evans has chosen not to work with sites that promote gambling”!

When are merchants going to start to learn?

Look “Evans” - we run a site that has a casino area, but we also have a shopping section, an offers section and a community who just might be interested in your fashion products and offers. We’re not exactly going to be stuffing your banners and offers in areas where slots and bingo are listed now are we? We know that, so Evans knows why you can’t grasp what is a very simple concept.

And just to rub salt in the wound… Evans knows why you’re inconsistent! You accepted account #2, but not #1… you accepted us on Awin… and you’re happily being promoted (via Awin) on various cashback sites - that get this… yes, they also promote gambling!

Evans Knows Where The Consistency Is?

6 Comments so far - Why Not Have Your Say?

    1. Sorry to say but affiliates have proven themselves to be “grubby.” In other words they’re low value opportunists who do not deliver **incrimental** value to advertisers.

Those who are not grubby are busy either being acquired or positioning to be acquired based on having matured from “grubby” to “scrappy” through innovation and having BONDED with customers — earning their loyalty (i.e. in the States, TrafficStrategies, MeziMedia/CouponMountain.com, etc.). The customer loyalty that mature affiliates have worked hard to secure is now being honored by both advertisers and networks.

Affiliate marketing has forever changed. Affiliates that haven’t made the leap to “publisher”, agency (i.e. Pepperjam.com, Clicks2Customers) are relegated to the disrespectful scenario you describe.

    2. Interesting comment Jeff… I’d hope that the beacon that is affiliate marketing shines a little brighter than how you portray it. Imo many of the problems are due to lack of understanding from merchants and the networks not acting sufficiently well as a conduit for communication between merchant and affiliate (or agency and affiliate).

There’s still room for “grubby” characters like ourselves who after 10 years of running the same site haven’t been concerned about acquisition and rather concentrated on providing a service (which I guess makes us a publisher).

But that counts for jot if the the person with the button is clueless about affiliate marketing.

    4. You were right to be cautious! I’ve just received the email saying they are closing and have quickly applied to Tradedoubler. Lets just hope they accept me as my whole site is based around the Evans datafeed!

    5. Evans above will you sort out the tab order on your comments!

As for the actual post, you seriously can’t be that surprised at the inconsistency within this mad world we live in? Being declined with no reason has been an ongoing complain with TD and for some reason nothing has changed.

I don’t know why some networks choose not to these complaints/comments, as to me, this should be classed as constructive criticism. By doing so could differentiate between an average network and a network actively striving to become the best in its field.

But hey, what do I know… I’m grubby too!

    6. Comment tab stuff is now fixed… :)
