How To Email & Not Email An Affiliate May 31st, 2007 10:33 am

This ties in nicely with some of the pitching emails that Kieron has blogged about recently. I hate this kind of email:

Hi - I got your contact from Affiliates4U - I’m real interested in working with you. Please contact me ASAP, Thanks

The positives - well, at least they’re trying to make contact, and at least they say how they’ve found me?

Now the negatives: I know nothing about them or their company, what they do, what they offer or even why they want to work with us? I could click on the url in their signature and find out who the company is and perhaps work out who they are, but perhaps I’m too lazy to do that?

As is, I’m not lazy and have visited their website which says (c) 2004 on the homepage (not very up to date then) and there’s relatively little about the company. So I’m none the wiser and as they can’t be bothered to explain themselves to me (remember they’re the ones saying “I’m real interested in working with you”) why should I be remotely interested in working with them?

Far better to use the time blogging about how not to email affiliates and hopefully encourage people to put a bit of effort into their emails. Tell us who you are, what you do, what your company does, what your company can offer us, and why in amongst the hundreds of programs that are around and numerous networks that are available that you should be worth replying too.

In fact, here’s a template email for you to use:

Dear (Site Owner’s Name)

My name is (your name) and I work as a (your job) for (your company). I found your details from (insert information) and have been looking over (affiliate website name) and feel we can be of benefit to you.

We are a (insert type of company, perhaps even a bit of background) and we provide (insert services). Our clients include (insert client details) and think that these (insert specific client names) could be ideal for promotion on (insert affiliate site name, perhaps even specific areas of the affiliate website to demonstrate you know what the site does). We can offer you (insert what you can offer affiliate).

If this is of interest please reply or visit our website (insert website) for more details and references. I’d be happy to call you or arrange a meeting to discuss matters further.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Note that your email may still end up in the trash can and you may not get a reply, but at least you know your “pitch” won’t end up being blogged about!
