Another Merchant Ends Product Feed Use

Newitts, a sports merchant running on both Affiliate Window and Buy.at has announced today that:

Due to misuse of our product feed it has been decided to stop this service. All other affiliate links will still be active and we will be adding further links, and banners in the future.

This follows a similar announcement back in February whereby a golf merchant cut their descriptions from product feeds. It’s a surprise announcement from Newitts, and it’s unclear if this will effect both Awin and Buy.at affiliates, especially at a time when Affiliate Window have announced their new “Shop Window” technologies.

There are a number of issues here:

1. If a merchant is aware of misuse - why not just deal with the affiliate’s who are misusing? Why is it that decent affiliates have to continually suffer because rather than deal with a problem head on, the only tactic seems to be “pull the plug”?

2. Is product feed misuse is widespread, will we see more merchants pull the plug?

3. What exactly is product feed misuse?

4. Will we soon see “private groups” only allowed to use feeds in the same was some PPC programs run?

    1. You’ve hit the nail on the head - “What exactly is product feed misuse?”

If affiliates don’t know what misuse is, how do they know they are misusing the feed?

Surely all you can do with a feed is parse it and create website, or edit and and use it as a basis for PPC. I could be wrong but that’s all I would use a feed for.

Perhaps this is another in a long line of merchants who want to clip their affiliate programmes down to just the elite affiliates?
