Affiliate Network Council To Bring In Conduct Code

The NMA report this week that “The IAB Affiliate Network Council (ANC) will draw up an affiliate code of conduct before the summer” (perhaps just in time for the A4UExpo Affiliate Marketing Conference in October, which is supported by the IAB and has The NMA as it’s media partner?).

The article goes on to report that David Hall, Affiliate Window’s head of communications is now chairing the council and I guess it will be his task to bring in a code of conduct. Interestingly the code will be “to represent the interests of IAB members in affiliate marketing”, so how this will affect non-IAB affiliates remains to be seen.

After looking at The IAB’s Affiliate Section it’s not just a code of conduct that needs to be implemented - a whole section on affiliate marketing needs developing, and there’s nothing about the ANC or David’s appointment in their news (as of 22nd March 07)! Perhaps one recommendation for a code of conduct would be “try and keep up to date”?

    1. It’s an interesting move, any idea who is actually on this council?

    2. No idea and a Google search doesn’t bring up much info.

Although I did find this: “The IAB will be launching its Affiliate Network Council on Tuesday 28th March at 10am at the IAB. This meeting will largely be an update on IAB projects that are relevant to the group and a general discussion about how the IAB can help its Affiliate Network members moving forward”.

So perhaps we’ll learn more next week?

    3. […] Last week NMA carried the news that the IAB were working on an affiliate code of conduct. More news on this at One Little Duck. […]

    4. The comments are spot on it’s a Merchants code of conduct that is needed here, and Affiliates just have to agree to the terms of the program then you need to get the Networks and Merchants to enforce them, easier said than done.

Problem is most Merchants couldn’t tell you what the right thing to do is (again not all Merchants as some get up set when I say most) and besides a quick check of the IAB members in the ecommerce section and look over the past year of things they have done in the Affiliate Marketing space and you will soon see why a code of conduct for Merchants would solve many of the issues overnight. However what we are most likely to see is Affiliates do this and that or your out.. But what do I know, I have nothing whatsoever to do with the IAB and they can come up with anything they like but if they don’t involve the main voices in the Affiliate Marketing space they will be on to plumbs.

Good luck to all involved please let us know what you have decided when you do.

    6. David Hall certainly has a tough job ahead of him - especially when you look how some of their merchants behave!

    7. Just to note that I am going alone to the next one of these tomorrow. Will let you know how I get on and what the outcome is. The invite is open and they do encourage as many affiliates (/merchants/networks/agencies) as possible to attend.
