Competition Sponsor Thanks

A big thanks to Figleaves, Justhom, The Gift Experience, Redsave and Prezzybox who all donated prizes for a few Christmas competitions that we ran for our users. We only asked a few merchants for prizes and only one failed to respond. In the past we’ve run advent style competitions (1 prize per day per sponsor during advent) but found that there’s usually a bit of a decline in entries and interest starting around the middle of the month and up to Christmas Day (coinciding with office parties, shopping, people finishing work).

Therefore our Christmas sponsored competitions now run from the start of November to the end. Usually this gets the early shoppers interested in buying gifts and seeing what’s on offer, but stats this year point to a later surge of shopping (this week especially), so next year any competitions will be run into December. The competitions attracted a lot of interest and plenty of clickthroughs, which considering the prizes were no more than £50 not bad promotional value. It would have been nice to see more sales, but by sponsoring a competition the merchants involved will now get extra attention during the next 12 months.

We do have our own advent competition but use this now purely as a “thank you” to our users for supporting the site over the last 12 months. This year’s prize is a calendar - ordered from Photobox - that features some of the duck holiday pictures that users have taken. We were a little concerned about how the prize would be received, but early indications suggest it’s well liked, much sought after and thankfully good quality (well you’d hope so for £15 each).

As a further thank you we also run an annual Christmas Hamper competition. Last year we sent a massive hamper, wine and even a few decorations to one user, and this year one lucky user is getting 5 (yeah 5) hampers (it’s amazing what you can get with a budget of £250 from Hampers.com). A couple of users also won goats (charity gifts) which did resort in one replying “how are you going to send me my goat?”!

Next year we may actively seek a few more sponsors for competitions throughout 2007 (if you’re interested then let us know - we don’t need big prizes but if you have them…), but it’s always nice to be able to give something back to the people who make doing this job possible (and that’s the users).
